Matheran :

Matheran is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 800 metres. Mr. Hugh Poyntz Malet, the Collector of Thane, discovered Matheran (meaning "forest on the top") in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Mumbai, laid foundations of the future development of Matheran as a hill station.
Matheran can be reached in two ways. One option is to take an exciting two hour ascent in a train, with monkeys jumping on and off. The narrow gauge train from Neral (87 km from Mumbai) meanders up the mountain, treating the tourists to a breathtaking view. The other option is to take a tough 11 km road hike passing through dense forests. Matheran's cliffs with incredible heights create stunning tourist points.
The main bazaar offers a variety of articles such as cane and leather articles, hats, chappals and the sweet specialty - "Chikki". Vehicles of any kind are not permitted in the town.

Matheran is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. It is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are not allowed, which makes the place different from others. Matheran takes you over a hundred years back in time when there were no vehicles.

Because of vehicles being banned in Matheran, the place is quite peaceful despite the thousands of visitors coming to visit throughout the year.

There are lots of lookout points that provide spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Matheran has a reasonably dense forest cover.

There are around 38 designated look-out points in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. From this point, the view of sunset and sunrise is breathtaking. The Louisa Point offers crystal clear view of the Prabal Fort. The other points are the One Tree Hill Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Rambagh Point, and more.

Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is a popular holiday resort and honeymoon spot, and an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is the site of Mahabaleshwar Temple. Many tourists visit nearby Panchgani. After the construction of a new highway, it is only a five-hour drive from Mumbai. Mahabaleshwar is also known for the honey and strawberries produced here.

Some of the popular tourist spots include:

Wilson Point
It is also called as Sunrise point. It is the highest point in Mahabaleshwar at 4710 ft above sea level. There are three masonary round platforms to see the sunrise. You are advised to see sunrise and sunset from platform no 2. You can also see sunset from this point.

Connaught Peak
Connaught Peak is the second highest point in Mahabaleshwar. It presents panoramic view of the valley. You can see sunrise as well as sunset from this point. At its north you can see Torana, Kamalgadh and Rajgadh. To its east are Pasarani Ghat and Panchgani. Ajinkyatara is at the south. To the west is Pratapgadh. Elphinston Point and Kshetra Mahabaleshwar are at north-west. It was formerly known as Mount Olympia.

Elphinston Point
The first point of Mahabaleshwar overlooking two valleys, Koyna on the left and Savitri on the right.

Marjorie Point
Several ranges of the Sahyadri mountains can be seen from here.

Castle Rock
It is on the way to the Arthur's seat and has a good view of Savitri valley.

Arthur's Seat
Queen of all points. Some compare the stratification of rocks on southern side to the world famous stratification of rocks of the Grand Canyon of Colorado, USA. It is fascinating to see the barren deep valley Savitri on the left & shallow green valley on the right. Arthur's seat is the only place showing geographical distinction of Kokan & Desh (Deccan), the two territories of Mahabaleshwar, clearly. If you go by the steps you come across a spring known as Tiger's spring which is supposed to be the source of the river Savitri. Immediately below the seat is Window Point. You have to go deep by steps to reach the Window Point.

Kates Point
Offers breathtaking view of Krishna Valley & deep waters of the Dhom dam. From south it looks like an elephants head. There is also an echo point.

Dapoli:

Dapoli is one of the most important tourist places in the Konkan region of the State of Maharashtra. The place bathing in the pristine natural beauty with soothing seashore and greenery and scenery all around attracts tourists from different parts of the country throughout the year.

Dapoli is popularly known as ‘Mini Mahabaleshwar’ owing to the consummate natural beauty of the place. (Mahabaleshwar- a hill station in the Satara district of Maharashtra- is considered to be an epitome of natural beauty.) The cool climate of Dapoli has a soothing touch which is the prime need for the tired souls and weary minds.

Dapoli is just 8 km away from the Arabian Sea and serves as a main town for many villages around it like Sarang, Bhopan, Dabhol, Jaalgaon and many more. It comes in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.

Historical Importance:
Dapoli is the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve who devoted all his life to the education and empowerment of women. Great souls like Lokmanya Tilak and P.V. Kane were born here. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar also studied here in the Alfred Gadney Highschool for some years. Thus the place is historically important.

Places to visit:
As regards the places worth visiting in Dapoli, following are a few of them:

1) Panhalekaji Caves:
This is a must visit place located on the Dapoli-Dabhol road. You can also reach here from Khed via Vakavali and Tetavali. You will love the beautiful caves here and admire the deft hands that crafted them out. Vehicles reach up till the caves. Bird watchers can find many beautiful birds and reptiles in this area.

2) Suvarnadurg and Kanakdurg Forts – Harne:
Around 17 km from Dalpoli at Harnai, lie two grand forts called Suvarnadurg and the Kanakdurg. Out of them Kanakdurg is a land fort and Suvarnadurg is a sea fort. Both the forts were built during the Adil Shahi reign and later fortified by King Shivaji. Inside Kanakdurga you can see a big lighthouse as well.

3) Unhavare- Hot Water Spring:
Unhavare village which is just 20 km away from Dapoli is famous for the natural hot water springs. There are a few guest houses as well where tourists can stay. People living in the surrounding areas come here every day for bathing. Separate shelters are available here where men and women can take a dip into the hot waters. There are a couple of Hindu temples and a mosque as well.

4) Kadyavarcha Ganapati:
This is an added attraction near Dapoli. Anjarle village near Dapoli is famous for the Ganesh Temple called Kadyavarcha Ganapati. The temple is constructed on the cliff and so this name. (Kada in Marathi means cliff in English) The wooden pillars of the temple are the main architectural feature here.

The Ganesh idol in the sanctum is very beautiful. The trunk of Lord Ganesh is bent towards His right and so the place is regarded very auspicious. The stone staircase on the right side of the Shikhar catches the eye of all. A beautiful view of coconut trees and beetle nut trees is another turn on here. The pond right in front of the temple is one more attraction. People gather here to see the fish and the turtles in the pond.

5) Murud Beach:
Murud Beach is one of the longest beaches in Konkan which is spread around 10 km away from Dapoli.

Food and Accommodation:
There are many private lodging and boarding facilities available in Dapoli.

Alibaug:

Alibaug is one of the famous tourist attractions in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It seems that Mother Nature has been too bountiful while bestowing her riches on Alibaug. Famous for the beautiful clean beach and the consummate natural beauty, Alibaug always attracts tourists from all over the world throughout the year.

Alibaug was famous as the enigmatic capital of King Shivaji’s admiral Kanhoji Angre. This is the place where you can see a Jewish Synagogue and cemetery. This is perhaps the only place in the Konkan region where you find a Portuguese and a Maratha sea fort of the opposite sides of the same island waterway.

Where is it located?
Alibaug comes in the Raigad district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Alibaug is around 140 -145 km from the city of Pune and the entire journey takes around 4.5 hours. A one day trip to Alibaug is merrily possible for the people from Mumbai; but for tourists from Pune it is just a bit hectic. I think a two day stay here in Alibaug is a must if you want to drink all the natural beauty of the place with all your senses.

Alibaug lies at a distance of just 19 km from the Mumbai Port and hence is one of the heavily crowded tourist attractions for Mumbaikars. Over the years the place has been rapidly developed into an attractive tourist destination and so even people from Pune are ready to take some efforts and reach Alibaug on weekends.

The recently developed gardens of coconut and areca trees and the natural lush greenery of Alibaug has been a major turn on here. The Colaba Fort, fresh clean air and pleasant climate of Alibaug give you a call. Away from the humdrum hubbub of the city life, Alibaug offers you some of the tranquil moments which have become a dire need in this age of speed.

The Name Alibaug:
It is said that a person called Ali planted coconut and areca trees here. ‘Baug’ is a Marathi equivalent for ‘garden’ and so the place is called ‘Alibaug’.

Alibaug is famous for one of the very few unspoiled beaches in the country. The sea here has always been an enticing attraction for the photographers and painters. Prolific writers and poets, too, seek inspiration from the sea here. As the wind blows, as the waves come and touch your feet and dissolve in one another, as the sun rises at the horizon and sinks into the sea while setting, all these happenings at the beach tell you a lot. Poets find them symbolical; as a metaphor on human life.

The view of the old Colaba fort now in ruins makes you think about the transience of the grandeur and the glory of the empires. The view of the hill ranges of the Western Ghats on the other side of the city look awesome.

All in all Alibaug is an ideal place for the idle weekends and relaxed vacations. Alibaug is actually a small town comprising 50,000 residents and agriculture as the main occupation. This is the reason why you love the tranquility and quietude of the place.

Many people from Mumbai own farmhouses off the beach in Alibaug and so they frequent the place when their tired city souls and weary minds need some respite from the common din of city life.

The best time to visit:
You as a tourist can visit Alibaug any time of the year; but according to me a visit immediately after the end of the monsoon is the best time to come here. You enjoy the greenery and the scenery all around here and the flowers blooming and blossoming briskly on the branches definitely allure you.

Food and Accommodation:
Alibaug being an important tourist attraction near Mumbai and Pune, you find plenty of resorts and private lodging and boarding facilities here.

How to reach:
Regular buses are available from the Swargate Station, shivaji nagar in Pune. Catamaran facility too is available from Mumbai.

So plan a trip to Alibaug on some weekend and spend some of the tranquil moments of your life.

Harihareshwar:

Harihareshwar is indeed a place worth visiting. I don’t think a one day trip to Harihareshwar is practical or feasible because the place is blessed with such consummate natural beauty that you don’t feel like leaving it in one day. A stay here for at least a couple of days will give you some satisfaction. As for myself, I would like to stay in Harihareshwar for good and drink the matchless natural beauty of the place with all my senses.

Where is it located?
Harihareshwar is around 130 km from the city of Pune and around 200 km from Mumbai. This proximity of the place from both these metropolises has made Harihareshwar one of the most popular weekend getaways for the people from Pune and Mumbai.

The place has acquired utmost tourist importance over the years as it offers a chance for the tired workaholics to rejuvenate themselves. Moreover the religious importance of Harihareshwar is indisputable as the place is famous for the Harihareshwar temple along the seashore. Not very far from Harihareshwar is another clean beach called Shrivardhan. In short there is plenty to see here in Harihareshwar.

Harihareshwar is popularly known as the Kashi of Southern India. The four sacred hills called Harihareshwar, Harishinachal, Brahmadri and Pushpadri that surround Harihareshwar add to the sanctity and grandeur of the place.

A cluster of Hindu temples lies near these four hills. Here you find beautiful idols of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. According to the historical references, these temples were constructed in the 16th century. A beautiful idol of Goddess Parvati too catches the eye of the visitors. Moreover the temples of Lord Kalbhairav and Shri Yogeshwari too can be seen. The sanctity and serenity of the place is all pervasive.

One of the striking features of Harihareshwar is that here you find a splendid melange of natural beauty and artificial architectural excellence. The dark woods, silent and shallow sea waters, clean beaches and lovely temples built along the sea shore….wow!

Harihareshwar is a paragon for the lovers of photography and painting. You can see many photographers and landscape painters capturing the pristine beauty of nature into their camera or their canvas. The sunrise and the sunset at the beach are a treat to watch. The unruffled sea of Harihareshwar has always been a source of inspiration for many prolific writers and poets. All in all a trip to Harihareshwar helps a great deal in finding a way out from the boring city life.

Food and Accommodation:
It’s an important tourist attraction in Maharashtra, many hotels, restaurants and private lodging and boarding facilities are available here. For those who are interested in boating and trekking, good facilities are available.

It is indeed an excellent weekend getaway for you. So do plan a trip to this beautiful place as soon as possible and drink the natural beauty of the place with all your senses.

Diveagar:

Diveagar: On the shore of grand and beautiful Arabic sea is situated the serene and picturesque Diveagar beach. This wide and pristine beach is blessed with natural beauty that includes tender sand and refreshing coconut groves. The beach near Pune is one of the best places to travel if you are looking to spend some tranquil moments and relaxing in the lap of nature. And not to forget the famous Lord Suvarnaganesha temple, which is one of the main attractions of tourists visiting here. So, it’s time to deck-up, get into a car with your loved ones and set-off in a journey that leads to heaven on earth, to enjoy the warm balmy sand, cool intoxicating natural air and the blessings of Lord Suvarnaganesha.

Lord Suvarnaganesha Temple:

The sculpture of Suvarnagenesh is made of pure 24 caret gold and weighs 1 kilo and 300grams, with height of 60cm (24 inches). The sculpture is believed to have been made some 300 to 400 years ago. It is said that this sculpture was created to mask a stone idol of Lord Ganesha, which was earlier stationed in the temple. However, it still remains a mystery as who and when had buried the sculpture. But people of Diveagar have tremendous devotion in Suvarnagensh and believes that the god is blessing the place with immense opulence.

Sundernarayan Temple

Also known as Rupnarayan temple, it is believed to be built way back in the thirteen century, under the rule of King Shilahar. The idol is one of the finest examples of sculpture designing.

The four hands of the idol along with the accessories, shank (conch shell), chakra (wheel), gada (weapon), padma (lotus), are carved in such a mystic manner that when seen in a clockwise direction, one can see 24 different appearances of Lord Vishnu.

The beauty of the idol was affected slightly during the struggle of the natives with some foreigners when they tried to steal it.

Seashore

Seashores are one of the main attractions of Diveagar. The grand sea-shore behind Sundarnarayan temple is about 4-5 kilometers long and has soothing sand beneath and the semicircle sea would invite you into the bliss of nature. The place with its unruffled calmness will help you to connect with the divine.

The sunset will certainly be the most gratifying of all sights. At twilight, the sun starts to embrace the horizon and after a moment it kisses the horizon, getting submerged into the sea and turning it saffron with coyness. It is a sight to behold when the waves dash against the shore and get mingled with the sand.

Lazy Starfish can be seen in winters, whereas fidgety Crabs can be found in summers. The place is certainly the one where you can return to nature and enjoy its bliss in full glory.

Food and Accommodation

There are many hotels and resorts in Diveagar with excellent facilities that will make your stay a comfortable one. Diveagar hotels and resorts have facilities like self contained standard rooms (double bed)-AC/non-AC, self contained house – (two bedrooms, hall)-AC/non-AC, attached bathroom with shower and hot water, invertors, separate bathroom/toilet for drivers, and more. All these hotels have restaurants of their own serving varied delectable cuisines.
